Jose is a twelve-year-old boy who loves video games. Left to his own devices, he could easily spend four to five hours a day playing games, more on weekends. Jose sometimes tussles with his parents over this, because they would like him to have more varied interests. He has maintained good grades in school: mainly As and Bs. He frequently plays video games online with a wide circle of friends.

Amanda is a thirteen-year-old girl who enjoys playing video games on her iPad. She plays for roughly two to three hours each day. She is also active in dance and an engineering club at school. When she comes home, she has difficulty focusing on schoolwork, and gravitates instead to her iPad. Her parents haven’t had much luck getting her to finish her homework. As a result, her grades have been slipping, and she is at risk of failing eighth grade. Amanda is aware of the problem but has difficulty reducing her gameplay.
